Muslims in Indonesia, including traditional leaders and women, are protesting against the founding of a controversial polygamy club. The club, which currently adheres to the Islamic ruling that permits a man to marry up to four wives, was originally founded in Malaysia and aims to promote and disseminate polygamy. Muslim leaders question the purpose of such a club which they chide for the instrumental use of Islam. Reasons for banning the banning the club include the high possibility of family strife and disputes, and the unequal status of men and women in marriage, among others.
