Cambodia to set up halal certification body
January 10, 2010
The Cambodian government is planning to set up a halal certification body. Currently Cambodians rely on their faith and trust in the proprietors in making choices about halal products. The article quotes a government official who says that “In most other countries, this is completely the work of Islam,” he said. “But for Cambodia, we don’t want to do it that way. We want cooperation between Islam and the government.” This is however not true as halal regulations are usually enforced by an official state organization in at least one other country in Southeast Asia, Singapore.
